Use Nature in Your Holiday Crafts

While much of your yard may be frozen, there are still pieces you can use to decorate your home. Here are some simple holiday crafts you can make with your children or by yourself by using items found in your yard or in your home:

1. Rock Snowman

Find light-colored rocks of various sizes and stack them like you would stack snowballs for a snowman. Use a marker to add a face or other traits and hot-glue the body together. Make a rock snowman for every member of your family and display together.

2. Living Ornaments

Pinned from Martha Stewart, gently place your greenery inside a clear glass ornament. Leave the top of the ornament off for 24 hours to allow any moisture to escape. Tie a looped ribbon through the cap and you’ll have an elegant accent to light up any room.

3. Pinecone Ornaments

Gather up pinecones from your yard and paint them to match your holiday décor. Tie a looped ribbon to the end and hang these natural ornaments on your tree or from windows, doorways or light fixtures.

4. Ice Sun-Catchers

These ice spheres decorate your yard with natural elements. To begin, take a muffin pan and fill it with water. Add leaves, berries or other parts of nature to each hollow. Cut some string and tie it into loops. Place each loop in a water-filled hollow, making sure part of the string is in the water and part is left out. Place the pan outside to freeze. To use these sun-catchers, run warm water on the bottom of the pan until they are loose enough to remove. Use the looped string to hang from branches or outdoor light fixtures. You can try several variations with this craft by using different size pans or adding different elements, like food coloring, to each ice sphere.

5. Pinecone Wreath

Use pinecones to add some holiday spirit to your front door. You will need pinecones, spray paint, ribbon, a foam wreath and a glue gun. Paint the foam and pinecones a matching color, then use the glue gun to adhere pinecones to the foam. Decorate, if desired, with a bow and holly sprigs with berries. Tie a piece of ribbon at the top of the wreath so you can hang it and enjoy in different areas of your home.
