Planning a Garden to Attract Wildlife
Categories: News
Attracting wildlife to your backyard brings many rewards not only to property but to critters as well. It’s very important to realize from the start of your planning that attracting wildlife to your home and garden requires responsible land management. By understanding your wildlife needs and using appropriate landscaping, you can “invite” numerous guests throughout the year.
There are three basic needs to any species: Food, shelter and water. The relative location of these necessities is what creates a usable wildlife habitat. Here are four basic steps to begin your adventure and the planning of your habitat:
- Determine the desirable species of wildlife that live in your area.
- Select the wildlife you want to attract and learn about their needs and requirements.
- Take inventory of your landscape and that of your neighbors.
- Build and plant projects to improve the surrounding habitat.
When planning, take into consideration the size of your yard, your budget, and develop a calendar with your plan. Smaller habitats will be finished much sooner than larger ones!
Trees, shrubs, grasses, perennials and annuals all provide food and cover for your wildlife. Rock piles, brush piles, decaying logs and stumps, and compost piles are all valuable cover components for your backyard. Bird baths and decorative ponds are excellent sources of fresh water. Remember: the size of your space and plant selection are all key to good land management.
Whether a city lot or country acres, proper planning will create a refuge for your nature friends and years of delight for you!
