Evergreens: Timeless Plants for Your Garden
Categories: News
Local gardeners are fortunate to have a variety of trees to select for their yards because our climate allows many different species to grow successfully. However, this variety can prove to be a challenge in selecting the right one for you.
Evergreens are a great choice if you want a tree or shrub that provides color year-round. These low-maintenance trees won’t lose their leaves or needles in the fall like deciduous trees.
Evergreens come in various shades of green, blue and yellow. Some types even offer colorful flowers, like rhododendrons and azaleas.
Because evergreens can survive all of Ohio’s seasons, they are ideal for many uses:
- Wind Screen: As a plant that can survive in the cold, evergreens work well for blocking wind. Plant some around your house, patio or garden to help keep you shielded on a windy day.
- Privacy: You can use tall evergreens to create a hedge. This natural fence will give your home increased privacy while also enhancing the look of your yard.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Add evergreens to your yard or garden simply for their natural beauty. They can also be used to cover parts of your home, like an exposed foundation, that aren’t visually appealing.
There are many varieties of evergreens. Some grow over 75 feet tall, while dwarf selections may grow less than two feet tall. Some arborvitae grow in a skinny, columnar shape while creeping blue spruce spreads out along the ground.
Think carefully when choosing a tree, as it will last for many years. No matter your need, there is an evergreen with the right color, shape and size for you.
