The Perfect Peony
Categories: News
Peonies are fat and sassy flowers that provide exceptional color and tantalizing scents. They enjoy full to part sun and well-drained soil. Once established, peonies are long-lived and provide years of large colorful blooms. They make a stunning border or hedge. We have many different varieties and styles to match any garden plan.
There are three styles of Peonies:
Tree peonies (Paeonia rockii) have woody stems that lose their leaves in the fall, but the woody stems stay intact. They tend to bloom earlier and have larger flowers than the herbaceous peony. We have amazingly beautiful tree peonies available such as the light pink variety.
Herbaceous peonies are the most common type of garden peony and compose the majority of the peonies in the Peony Garden. Their stems die back to the ground each winter.
Buckeye Belle with its semi-double, velvety red blooms is just one of the stunning herbaceous peonies we have available for you.
Intersectional Peonies are considered a hybrid; they are derived from a cross between a white Herbaceous Peony (Paeonia lactiflora ‘Kakoden’) and a yellow hybrid Tree Peony (Paeonia x lemoinei.) This process was carried out in 1948 by Mr. Toichi Itoh. For this reason, they are also known as Itoh hybrids or Itoh peonies. Itohs have the leaves of the tree peony, but die back to the ground like herbaceous peonies. What makes them so valuable is that they are available in colors traditional peonies are not. Bartzella is a beautiful itoh variety with brilliant, double yellow blooms. It received the Grand Champion Award from the American Peony Society. The stems of this vigorous plant require no staking.
Be sure to choose your favorite from our wide selection next time you are in the greenhouse!
