Flowering Kalanchoe

While Kalanchoe is a broad genus that includes over 100 species, Flowering Kalanchoe is certainly a fan favorite.

Also known as “Florist’s Kalanchoe”, “Widow’s Thrill”, and “Flaming Katy” Kalanchoe blossfeldiana generally simply goes by the name of the whole Genus: “Kalanchoe”. It sports incredible long lasting blooms atop a stem protruding from a mound of succulent leaves and it is super easy to care for.

Flowering Kalanchoe likes a well-draining soil and can often thrive in a cactus or succulent soil mix. Watering needs are fairly minimal; It prefers to be bottom watered and only needs a drink when the soil has completely dried. Flowering Kalanchoe is sensitive to temperatures below 40 degrees which makes it a perfect houseplant.  In terms of lighting, Kalanchoe loves bright indirect light and will stretch and get leggy when not enough light is available. Once the super long lasting blooms are spent, simply trim them off. Shortened days will trigger this awesome plant to re-bloom, but it can also bloom throughout the year at random times. Only fertilize bi-weekly when the plant is actively growing.
