Frequently Asked Questions
PLANT CULTURAL QUESTIONS

Q- What is “special” about plants grown at Meadow View?
A - We strive to offer the healthiest most attractive plants on the market. By paying close attention to many details, our staff of plant lovers nurture our crops from seeds, cuttings, or divisions until they become a saleable size. Our belief is that if our customers  start with purchasing healthy vigorous plants, they will grow and prosper in your garden and provide the results you are seeking.

Q- How often do I water my plants?
A
- Most container grown plants purchased at
Meadow View should only be watered when they dry down. If the soil feels moist when you insert your finger up to the first knuckle, don’t water. A thorough watering is suggested when plants first start to wilt when the soil feels dry to the touch. Drainage is very important so excess water escapes the container. Plants should not be allowed to sit in a saucer of water for more than 15-20 minutes. For further information stop in and ask one of our friendly staff.

Q- Do you have any plants that grow in the shade?
A
- Yes, we have a great assortment of perennials and annuals that will perform in the shade. Stop in and pick up a tip sheet on shade plants, or ask one of our friendly staff.

Q- Do you have any “new” plants I can grow?
A- Yes, each year we try many new varieties. Some turn out to be real winners, some don’t, but it is interesting and fun to experiment with different plants as there is such a wide selection from which to choose.

Q-How often do I fertilize my plants?
A
- Annuals-We recommend incorporating slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote when planting and using a water soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Gro or Jacks each time you water for the first two weeks after transplanting annuals. The water soluble fertilizer gets the plants off to a good start and the slow release continues to feed gradually throughout the growing season. An occasional watering with water soluble fertilizer throughout the season ensures good healthy plants.
A- Perennials- Water soluble fertilizer is recommended to get your perennial plants established. Application of a slow release fertilizer is a good idea for the first growing season after planting.

Q-When is it safe to plant annuals in the spring?
A
-The official frost free or “safe” date for planting most annuals in our area is
May 15. Pansies can be planted as early as March as they are tolerant of frost and freezing and actually perform better in cool weather. Petunias, snapdragons and dusty miller can be safely planted before May 15 as they are frost tolerant.
