: I've planted cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts in a raised bed filled mostly with purchased topsoil. Do I still need to protect against cutworms? And what do they look like? Thanks.

Marie, I have a 10X10 foot raised bed vegetable garden and I've had cutworms. Or at least what I call cutworms. I saw them a night when I got out in the garden with a flashlight and my reading glasses. (it's a good idea to check your plants at night with pests are active) These cutworms were green catapillers anywhere from a half inch long to an inch and a half. I used fresh BT (Bacillius Thurnginis (not spelled correctly, I'm sure) which I bought at home depot for under four bucks. I mix a table spoon in a sprayer and squirt it on at night. I's great stuff, but it does kill catepillers, which are butterflys and moths. I'd wait until I see them or their damage before I did anything, but check often. - Sam
