: : I recenly moved to a rural area and am starting a new Garden. I need to know what I can plant that do will not eat. Or How I can protect what I do plant from the deer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Deer don't like daffodils. Human or dog hair in old nylons scattered around the garden may keep the deer away. The only sure way to keep out deer is a high (6-8') fence.
The fence is the only sure way. Deer will eat even plants they don't like if hungry enough. You may have other animals such as rabbits and woodchucks, even cats and dogs will eat garden plants.
This information is from the Missouri Department of Conservation:
"Their favorites seem to be arborvitae, euonymus, mulberry, rhododendron, rose and yew.
Their second choice menu includes flowering fruit trees, fir, pine, serviceberry, dogwood, some junipers, Russian olive, and most hollies.
Their meals of last resort include bleeding heart, calendula, California poppy, columbine, cornflower, forget-me-not, hollyhock, iris, ivy, lily-of-the-valley, lobelia, narcissus, periwinkle, spiderwort and sunflower.
Distasteful ornamentals are barberry, bayberry, boxwood, coralberry, cotoneaster, forsythia, grape holly, hydrangea, some junipers, kerria, mockorange, potentilla, privet, pyracantha, quince, smoketree, spice bush, spirea, viburnum, weigela and witch hazel.
Perennials and vine seldom favored by deer include achillea, artemesia, astilbe, bee balm, black-eyed Susan, celastrus, coreopsis, decentra, geranium, honeysuckle, Siberian iris, lavender, liatris, peony, evening primrose, salvia, sedum, veronica, Virginia creeper and wisteria."
