: We have a crepe myrtle that the previous owners of our house planted about four years ago. Last spring I planted a blooming cherry tree about seven feet away from it. The crepe myrtle grew like crazy and now I think I need to move it, but do not want to mess up either plant. Is now (end of March)the time to move it? Is the root structure for these plants wide or deep? The plant is now about 6 feet in diameter.
STEVE: This will be a challenge to move the crape myrtle after 4 years but not impossible. Cut the plant back to about half it's present size, remove some of the bigger stems and thin the plant out. Now is the time to do this.
You will need a ball of earth about 30" in dia. and about 15-18" deep. Try to keep it solid and tie it up with burlap and move it to the area where you want it to be. Have the new hole ready so you can plant it immediately, after planting fill the hole with water and then only water when the soil starts to dry out. MVG Plant Dr.
