: I was on HGTV.com and asked about wild onions and they sent me to you. It seems like I have more onions then I do grass. Is there something I can use to get raid of them? Thank you.
ROY: This is a very tough one! You can rid your yard of them but you have to decide you are going to win first. That is it is going to be a tough job or no need to start the campaign.
If you decide to fight here is what to do...As soon as the weather warms up and they are growing rapidly apply 2-4-dtp, a broadleaf weed killer. This will not harm any grass. It can be sprayed on, but the best way is to wipe it on this particular weed. Add some dish detergent or other suffactent to help penetrate the waxy layer on the stems of the oinion. Wiping the weed killer on the plants will help break through the waxy layer also. You can wrap an old towel around a 2x4 about 3 or 4' long and soak the towel with the chemical and drag it over the infested part of your yard. You will have to rewet the towel occassionally to be sure there is plenty of chemical available to do the job. Let us know your results. Be sure there will be no rain for 72 hours or it will be necessary to retreat. It would be a good idea retreat 2 more times about 10 to 14 days apart. BE SURE TO FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS FOR MIXING THE CHEMICAL. MVG Plant Dr.
