: : My husband and I just moved into a new home with three walnut trees. We're wanting to do spring planting, but my father-in-law says few perrenials will grow in close proximity to the walnut (he thinks one is english and one is black). Any suggestions?
MO: There are some plants that do not thrive near walnut trees. It is best to avoid planting under the drip line of the branches. MVG Plant Dr.
Dear Mo,
From Rebecca's Garden Magazine: "Many plants fall victim to what is known as walnut wilt. This term describes the effect that the toxic substance juglone, secreted through the roots of black walnut trees, has on nearby plant life. Plants that are tolerant of the substance include zinnias, honeysuckle, American holly, carrot, corn, black raspberry, foxgloves, hostas, violets, and junipers."
Spiderwart, bleeding heart, daylilies, bellflowers, bluebells, iris and looseneck goosestrife have done fairly well.
