: I recently planted a five gallon Chinese Pistache.
It's basically just a thin trunk at this point, but
it's starting to sprout a few stems and leaves. The
problem is that the growth is occurring close to the
ground. Am I safe in pruning off this growth to
encourage the growth of stems higher up?
TONY: Yes, prune off the sucker growth at the base. If the tree is a graft or budded with a superior variety these suckers will revert the tree back to the rootstock, an undesirable variety. MVG Plant Dr.
