: I am purchasing 15 5' Blue Spruce trees in a few days to form
a sound barrier from the road noise. I live in northern
Michigan and the soil in my yard consists of black dirt for 1'
and then mostly moist sand. I have three 20 ft Blue Spruce trees currently
growing in the yard.

What preparation for the transplanting would you recommend?
Hole size, any soil conditioning, spacing between, etc?
Would they need much watering at first?

JEFF: Sounds like a good project...Plant in alternate rows, 6' between the rows and 8' in the row. In order to get some fast cover for the noise consider planting so decidious shrubs like forsythia, weiglea, spirea, etc between the blue spruce, they can be pruned back as the spruce grow and eventually eliminated. This will also provide some color.
Holes for the spruce should be the same depth as the root ball and twice the diameter, water well when planting(like flood the hole after the tree is in the ground and the backfill is completed) then water only as needed. MVG Plant Dr.
