I assume you want to replace the grass you have with another type?
You do not need to dig up the grass you have, if it
is the common varieties (fescue, blue grass, etc.)
or if it is mostly weeds.
The usual procedure is to use a product like
Round-up to kill all the existing grass.
Do this at least several weeks before the appropriate
planting time for your desired grass. At the correct
time, apply lime to your yard, then spread teh grass seed,
then use fertilizer. (I prefer Gardens-alive! Spring Lawns Alive
and Fall Lawns alive - my yard is fantastic!) Lightly
water the lawn every day for a week, then every two or three days, then let
the rain take care of it the rest of the way. You should be planting your grass
in spring or preferably fall (meaning it will be
well established before the hot summer and therefore
decrease teh water requirements.)
If you are having trouble with your lawn, it may also
need an application of iron. You should also get the
soil tested if you aren't already familiar with the
ph-level and other lacking nutrients. It might affect
how much lime and fertilizer you use.
