: Our home has two Miss Kim Lilac bushes that are hugh. They look like they have never been trimmed. Our first summer they flowered, but not real well. They look healthy, but are in need of help. Can I trim off branches from the root area, and if so how should I go about do that.?thanks
MARY LYNN: Yes, you can trim them back and now is the time to do it, right after blooming. Remove 1/3 of the oldest stems or trunks this year and shape the top some, next year another 1/3 and the third year 1/3. After the three year process you will have a new plant, continue this process as necessary but not necessarily every year. This should keep the plant blooming and yet "young". MVG Plant Dr.
