: I planted a row of 7 leyland cypresses in my backyard in March of 1999 to develop a screen effect. The trees seem healthy, yet are skinnier than most other leylands I see around my neighborhood. Is it possible I was sold the Charlie Brown Christmas tree variety or something? I've heard some people say to prune them, and some say not to prune them right away. They just doen't seem to have nearly as many branches as other leylands I see. Other than that they grew about 2-3 feet in the first year and seem pretty healthy. Any advice? Thanks!!

TOM: You are on the right track with pruning them back. If you will prune off about 1/2 of the growth from last year, shaping them into a pyramid shape you will be pleased with the results. You may not want to prune back quite that much, that is a judgement you will have to make when you get started. Be sure to prune all the side shoots as well. After 2 seasons of doing this I think you will be pleased. MVG Plant Dr.
