: My mother's home burned down the end of February (south-central mountains of PA) and two maples in front of her house and a very old hackberry behind suffered smoke and heat damage. 3 of the 7 trunks of the hackberry were removed, and we all have our fingers crossed. The maples are about 5 years old, are blackened from smoke and putting out very few buds so far. A nurseryman we consulted is slightly optimistic and has a wait-and-see attitude. Is there any way we can "wash" the smoke off of the trees? Would this give them a better chance?

Ralphine,

Washing the smoke off will not help. The damage is from the heat, it literally boils the sap in the tree. The damage is done. Heed the nurseryman, wait and see.
