I have two large mature crab apple trees approx 30 yrs old. Trunk diameter is 8 inches with 3 main 5 inch diameter branches growing from trunk. I have just pruned them and would like to now how to care for them to prevent the leaves from browning and falling by early summer as they usually do. Will the heavy pruning I did help or hurt? What type of fertilizer should I use and what should I do about watering.
