I have a couple varieties of garden phlox, and just aquired a few more. I have never thinned the shoots in spring, but all my resource books indicate that phlox should be thinned to 6 or so shoots when new growth appears in spring. I'm curious as to the purpose for this; does it produce larger blooms, or perhaps allow for more air cirulation thereby reducing mildew? Thanks in advance!
