: I live in Staten Island and am trying to save two mature Maples in my front yard. Large pieces of bark are coming off both trees from the ground up. Carpenter ants were around last summer but are gone now. I had guessed it might be the dreaded Maple Decline but the foliage seems okay. What can I do to give the trees a fighting chance?
Mike,
I think the trees have root and stem rot and will eventually die from it. There is no treatment, sadly. As long as the tree grows faster than the rot it should be okay. Try to protect the trunk and the root zone from damage.
