: : My friend gave me bulbs that she digs up every fall and replants in the spring. I believe they're called cannies. Have you ever heard of anything like that? She said they grow very tall...maybe 3-5 feet, and they have large red blooms and large leaves. Also, do these need to be dug up every year?
Dear Mary,
Canna lilies are popular for summer borders with their bright showy flowers and sturdy foliage. They grow 3 to 4 feet tall in a warm and sunny spot. The bulbs must be dug up every year, stored indoors and replanted the next spring.

They do not need to be dug up if you live in zone 9 or 10. I have several and they are doing wonderfully. I bought that new orange/purple leafed "Phison" from plants delights.
