I planted a butterfly bush last summer and it bloomed once. Can I prune it now and will it flower this summer? What can I use to fertilize it?
Hi Terri:
Butterfly bushes should be cut back in early spring down to 8-10" tall. (Should be fine to prune yours now.) Although some people are reluctanct to trim back, thinking it will harm blooming, butterfly bushes bloom on new growth best. I trim mine every spring and they bloom profusely and reach a very nice height of over 5'. Also, for continuous bloom, simply cut or pinch off faded flowers and you will continue to get new growth that produces more blooms up till a hard frost.
