: I just got a hybiscus tree and there was no instructions with it so I don't know exactly what I should do. Can I plant this tree in the ground and will it survive the winter months in Pa.? Should I plant them in a big pot and bring them in during the winter months. I would like to plant them in pot and have them around my pool area. Are they a dirty tree?

Any information would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks, Joy

Dear Joy,

Tropical hibiscus is quite a sturdy plant but it will not survive freezing temperatures. A light frost may cause leaf drop but the foliage will grow back from the roots and stem.

You should expect to bring the plant indoors during the winter months.

Growing them in a pot around your pool is a wonderful idea.

They are not a dirty tree except for insect problems like aphids and whitefly which can sometimes create a sticky residue.
