: : : I have three white pine trees in my lawn that the needles are turning yellow and dying one tree at a time. We had a very dry month of september, I watered the trees and lawn about 1/2 inch per week during this time. I live in Middle Tennessee and have not seen this happen before. Any help will be much appreciated.

I have planted almost nothing but pines in my yard and I've found out the same things everyone else has. White pines don't like Tenn. Nobody really knows what the problem is. Some of the answers I've read are horrific. Yes, pines loose their needles every year from the inside branches, but that is not what is killing them. They thrive further north of Tennessee. Some do great here, some don't. It's just that simple. I don't plant them anymore. Mugo & Scotch do very well here. Loblolly does too, but the catepillars
eat them up. Our agricultural center does not know the problem either. Look at ten or more White Pines planted together. You will find two or three that will not make it. It's just a sad fact in Tenn. Granted, there are other things that will kill a pine, but you can see most of them by looking carefully at the tree. Hopefully someday someone will figure all this out. Keep your garden fingers crossed.
