: Hi,
I just finished reading another message about apple trees and found out that the Stayman are not usally fertile trees. Is this true? I just planted it this spring it is about 4ft. tall. I plan to get a golden delicious to plant near it as that was suggested at one of the sites suggested on the message I read. Do you have any good or bad news for me about this tree? It only cost me $12.00 so its not as if I really lost, but if it is only going to flower then I would probably plant it where I wanted a flowering tree. Or does it not flower very good either? thanks for what ever you have to offer!

LONA LEE: A very good question. There is a lot of confusion about the "cross pollination" of apple trees. Steven gave several references to a writer on this page a few days ago, scroll down and find that message and check out the references he provided. But in a nutshell your Staymen Winesap will bear fruit but it must be cross pollenated with another variety. Your yellow delicious should work with the Staymen. The Staymen is an excellent pollenator for other trees too. If your apple trees are dwarfs they will bear fruit sooner, if they are standards it will be several years. My semidwarfs are just starting to bloom good after 7 years. But guess what? the frost got the blooms this year, not fruit!! MVG Plant Dr.
