: Hi!
I live in a small apartment in Orlando, FL and the only room I have to grow my modest herb garden is on the small outside porch facing west. The porch only gets four-five hours of direct sun. There is very little room, so I've planted three herb types to each flower box. I have Thyme, Basil (Sweet and Italian), Orageno, Dill, Mint, Rosemary, Dill and Lemon Balm. Most of them are doing fine, except for Dill who keeps dying and Oregeno who doesn't seem to be doing well either. Is it the sun? Or is there a problem with planting them together? How often should I be watering them? Any ides as to a better place to keep them? (IE, shade, or cooler climate, like inside?)
Thanks, K. Savino

KRISTINA: First, I hope you used a soilless potting mix in you window boxes...not topsoil, please.
The hot afternoon sun may be too much. You will have to water them frequently enough to keep the soil from becoming completely dried out, this includes weekends when you may not be home and when gone for several days. As the plants mature the watering demands will increase to almost daily and if it is really hot, you may have to water more than once daily. Do not over water!! a little wilt is ok, but not totally dried out.
The dill may be too vigorous for your window boxes, but it should grow for a while, there is nothing that will not grow together. MVG Plant Dr.
