: I recently ran across a picture of a Dogwood and decided i wanted one as part of my landscape. Unfortunately they don't thrive in Orange county (southern California). Any suggestions for an alternative that will grow in my region. I'm most interested in the branch structure and shape. Any help would be geatly appreciated.
I would try cornus florida which has a nice branch structure. The Western Garden Book specifically mentions the variety "cloud nine." But it will still be a challenge to get good flowering in s. cal. Good luck, it will be rewarding if you do get good results.
