: I live in an area where black walnut grows like wild fire. I am having trouble keeping my flowers alive around them. I understand the roots of the walnut give off some kind of poison which kills the plants.
Are there any counter measures I can take that will give my flowers a better chance at survival? the walnut trees are here to stay. Is all the soil affected even if the roots of the walnut trees have not grown out that far?
thank you.
The roots and other parts of the plant release a hormone, juglone, which is causing the problem. Raised beds can help. Better to grow resistant plants.
