Yellow spongy fungus in my ficus tree planter

I recently discovered a yellow, sponge-like fungus growing in the dirt that I have my ficus tree potted in. Resembles some sort of sea urchin (for lack of a better description). Do you know what is causing this fungus to grow there? It seems to be spreading on top of the soil.
