: we have just dug up, transproted and replanted a 25' black walnut. this particular sappling was growing under it's 75' parent in northeastern nj. it has been replanted in western nj. we were careful in digging wide and deep to take as much of the root system as possible. we also transported approx 100 lbs of it's soil to the new location since the new ground composition consists more of clay. we tried to take as much due diligence as possible to minimize the stress on the tree. unfortunately, we did develop a stress crack, about 15' up the trunk. it probably encompasses 25% of the trunk. at that point, the trunk is 2"-3" around. for the immediate, i tied three small pieces of wood around the area to act as a splint. for the long term, what needs to be done? will this mend itself? do i need to wrap with tar and burlap? cut the tree off at that point and let it regrow? any help would be appreciated!
MICHAEL: How big was the earth ball on the tree? Did you dig it with one of the large mechanized tree spades? Did the ball of earth remain solid and not get soft? Was the tree dormant(without leaves)?
As far as the split in the trunk, it depends on how severe the crack is as to whether it will heal. I would not apply any tar or other paint or tree dressing at this time. The splint will only work if it is bolted through the tree trunk, this may not be necessary.
Get back to us as to how the tree ball was dug, this is the most important factor. MVG Plant Dr.
