: I just received a rose tree as a gift from my husband. The landscaper told him that for winter I should pull the tree out & bury it with mulch, dirt, wood chips, etc. Is this correct? I can't see cutting it all the way down & burying it like my regular rose bushes. In the pot it stands about 4'5".
Please advise. Should I fertilize with anything special & how often should I fertilize.

KIM: Do not cut you rose tree back too severly, only the newest growth after it goes dormant in the fall. If you lift the root ball out of the ground, after the plant is dormant, in late November here in Ohio and bury it in a trench and cover with topsoil and mulch this should protect the graft union at the top of the tree and the root system. The end of March is the time to dig the tree up and replant it. If you want to avoid this hassle you will have to keep the tree in a large container and bring it in during the winter months to an area that does not freeze hard. I have been doing this for 5 years with my wife's rose tree and it seems to do fine, it is now in a 15 gal. pot, getting a little heavy to handle. MVG Plant Dr.
