HEY ALL I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS HOW TO GET SOME OF THESE PLANTS MY WIFE CALLS THE WATERMELLON FLOWERS PLOEASE HELP ME OUT THANKS SO MUCH TOM R.: : I would appreciate some tips on planting and growing a red hot poker. I bought a few YOUNG plants (one stem each) and have planted them in the full sun. Question: do they spread from the one planting? How long before they get big and bloom--right now the stem is about 7 inches high. How much space does each plant need? When they come back next year, will they multiply or remain one single plant
Kniphofia are frost hardy to somewhat tender.Open position in full sun.Well-drained soil and plenty of water in the summer. From spring onwards, fertilize monthly. Remove dead flower stems and leaves in autumn. Propagate species from seed or by division in spring. Note: I have started this plant from seed useing a heating matt and it was easy. They were started in early spring and by the next spring they did bloom. But they do require full sun. Do not cut back in fall and the plant will grow to about 4ft. Hope this helps.
