: : : Hey Meadowview I wrote a post 5/15 asking for advice on how to kill off a yucca plant that is growing too close to my back door steps and I have not received any advice from you or anyone to help. I now have lots of small baby plants shooting up to replace the mother plant we thought we dug out last year. The only suggestion I have received is fire which is a little risky that close to the house. I have received numerous emails and post on other sites from people with the same problem and asking me if I have found a solution yet and pass it on to them. So how about some professional help here and do us all a favor, huh? It's not that I hate yuccas but this is definitely a plant that needs to be a long way from doors, steps or anywhere any traffic passes. I certainly don't want a dozen to keep growing where they are sprouting now! PLEASE HELP US ALL WITH THIS PROBLEM ASAP! Thanks.
JANET: I'LL TRY, but give me a break on the May 15th time frame. We can't do much else at that time of the year but to stay with the business demands of the day. But now we can peddle a little slower, so here goes....
Have you tried Round Up or Fanale?? They are both good green plant killers but take a little time and reapplication 2 weeks apart may be necessary. These chemicals will not affect the soil adversley but you must wait until you get kill before removing the plants that are coming up. Follow label directions. Send me a new message with your results, ok? MVG Plant Dr.
Not trying to give you a hard time just desperate to stop any more of the over dozen shoots from taking over my entire backyard. I've been told these "yucky" (my new name of these possessed plants)plants can sprout from one leaf, so just trying to resolve asap. I used Roundup on some poison ivy on the other side of the yard along fenceline and I swear I went straight down edge of fence and I got dead grass on both my side and neighbor's for about 1 foot wide on each side plus I assume 2 possible wind-drift areas about 2 ft sq. approx., so that stuff is really scary to use within 3 ft of iris plants(done blooming only green at this point)that I don't want killed off. Is this Fanale any safer around other foliage than Roundup? I am not familiar with it. I usually have tomato plants in the space between, but decided not to plant there this year so I could treat for killing yuccas. Someone suggested charcoal lighter & lite new growth but didn't think would kill root which is what I'm really after. People are sending posts elsewhere like I am this awful person for even trying to kill these plants. I really have no choice since the mother plant eroded the entire corner off one of my back steps so if I don't want my steps to disinegrate entirely I have to act. People who are quick to condemn me better be REAL SURE where they want a yucca to grow because this is one tough plant to rid yourself of once its rooted. I let you know IF I am successful but would appreciate more info on Fanale vs Roundup. And while you're at it what can I use on the grass destroyed by Roundup or is new seed only option? I've heard of "greening up" your lawn with products but wasn't sure if lost cause at this point. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
JANET: Yes, Round Up is affective, and Finale will do the same thing. If you paint the Round Up on the plants you want to kill you can eliminate the drift problem you experienced.
The lawn that was damaged will have to be reseeded and started over, sorry no other solution except sodding which I do not recommend for this area. MVG Plant Dr.
