I have an old tulip poplar in my front yard. We had the canopy trimmed earlier this spring--we had a couple of years of drought in the DC area and had not trimmed the canopy in a few years and thought it prudent (perhaps a mistake?). Since then, two large branches have broken off the tree, one in late June and then one last week. Additionally, yesterday after a thunderstorm, I noticed that a large strip of bark peeled off the tree from way up the trunk. Are we going to lose this tree? Anything we can do? I think the tree is less than 200 years old since it is smaller than the tuliptree at Monticello. Thanks for any help.
