: I have an old tulip poplar in my front yard. We had the canopy trimmed earlier this spring--we had a couple of years of drought in the DC area and had not trimmed the canopy in a few years and thought it prudent (perhaps a mistake?). Since then, two large branches have broken off the tree, one in late June and then one last week. Additionally, yesterday after a thunderstorm, I noticed that a large strip of bark peeled off the tree from way up the trunk. Are we going to lose this tree? Anything we can do? I think the tree is less than 200 years old since it is smaller than the tuliptree at Monticello. Thanks for any help.
SUSAN: It is possible that the tree was struck with lightening recently or sometime ago or that part of the tree is dying. If this tree is of any value the only thing to do is to have a certified arborist make a visit and inspect the tree and make recommendations. MVG Plant Dr.
