Does the fruit taste good, or are they inedible??
I spoke to my nursery expert and the told me the thorns grow on water spike branches. These branches are "vigorous and don't bare fruit. They should be removed immediately as they sap the tree of nutrients." Look and see if the branches with thorns are flat or sided rather than round. Bottom line, clip them off when they start.
