Want to kill and remove a poplar

I have a poplar tree that is causing problems with my
basement wall and I want to cut it down. I understand
that if I cut it down without killing it first that it
will grow new shoots all over my lawn from the roots.
Does anyone have a proven way that I can kill the tree
before I have it cut down.
