Prune it now. They are very hardy and can take a good beating. I have seen them shaped up any size and all kinds of shapes. I saw one once that was cut flat on top only, I don't know how old it was but they kept it cut to about 2 1/2 feet tall and it had spread to about 6 or 7 feet in diameter. It looked like a table with red blooms all over the top of it.
