Hostas do not need to be pruned in the sence of removing branches as with woody perennials. They should, however, be divided if their growth is inhibited or they are too large for your personal taste. Spring or fall is the best time to divide hostas - simply dig up the entire plant and divide it in half, thirds...as many plants as you desire, provided each section has enough healthy root to sustain healthy growth. Just cut right through the root ball with a clean, sharp knife or garden saw. I prefer to do this dividing in the spring when new growth has emerged a few inches from the groung. Dividing can be done throughout the summer as well as spring and fall, but you must make sure to water daily for a week or so as they will dry-out faster due to the summer heat. Feel free to check out my website for details on dividing, pruning, propagating, etc...Happy gardening!
