: I have what I believe is a Boston fern which, for some time, has put out what I understand are arial roots or runners. Three of these roots now have young ferns growing from them. What are the methods of rooting these in soil so that they can be separated from the host plant? There is no available surface soil in the pot. Is this an indication the plant needs to be transplanted into a larger pot?
DIANA: If the fern you have is growing ok and you can keep it watered in the present container there is no need to repot it at this time.
To start your new plants, and this can be a lot of fun, clip them off and plant them very shallow in a pot of washed sand covered with a plastic baggy and they should root. Keep the pot out of direct sun as they will "cook" in the sun.
