: I planted a Japanese maple in my garden about two months ago in a spot that gets shade until midday, and then sun after. Now the leaves are starting to look all battered and dry and browning, except for one stem that would stick into the sun in the morning while the rest was in the shade. This stem is perfectly fine.
I've come to the (perfectly uneducated) conclusion that either the tree wasn't getting enough light (unlikely) or it has some sort of pest that's only active in the morning and doesn't like the sunlight.
I moved the tree to a place that gets full light a few days ago but I'd like your opinion, please. I'm in New Zealand, by the way, so it's the middle of summer here. Thanks.
ALETTA: This sounds like sun scorch to me. Japanese Maples are subject to this even as a mature tree if conditions are right. More so as a newly transplanted tree. The second move was not the best idea as the full sun may be causing the problem. This condition is not permanent. Keep the tree watered, not soaked. MVG Plant Dr.
