: I need help quickly. It looks like the small holly tree I received for Christmas is dying. When I received the tree the leaves were (for the most part) green and shiny and the tree was full of plump red berries.

I was told to keep the plant well-watered and in a cool place (even outdoors).

I did as I was told but many of the leaves have turned dark brownish and are dropping and the berries are withered. What did I do wrong? Did I overwater? Did the leaves freeze?

What can I do to save the tree?

Thank you for your help.

JOAN: If the holly tree was purchased in a store and the plant came from a greenhouse then it was probably not acclimated to the cold temps and froze. Not much to do with it now if this happened. You should get your money back if the store told you to put it outdoors in subfreezing temps without properly "hardening it off". MVG Plant Dr.
