Maria: Unless you have a specific problem that needs sulfur as a cure I would avoid it. What are you trying to control? Dormant oil spray is a good idea but do not spray blue spruce or japanese maples and follow label directions precisely. Earl

Earl,

sorry to take so long to get back. I have been trying to simplify my answer. I have around 20 some roses some more disease resistant then others. Two beautiful climbers that lost all leaves (twice) due to black spot last summer. I tried ALL fungicides to no avail. I also have a maple(vine) and a snow ball tree that were attacked two summers ago with a nasty black aphid. I also have a large amount of what I think are cut worms that devour any and all clematis and geraniums blooms. (I do not spray anything but my more problem roses, and the one maple and snowball) I am also plagued with rust, that I brought in on some holly hocks which by the way I have given up on, but I am wondering if the rust spores hang around to attack this year.

So I thought with the lime-sulfur sprat for rust, and black spot, and the oil to smother eggs. I believe that I have to use the two together to really get them to work and adhere properly. I have by the way done this with success on the aphids in the past, but I wonder if it works why do I not hear from my gardener friends that they use it religiously. I guess that is the real question.

I believe this is sort of a loaded question(s). But one (or some) I have wondered about for awhile. So let me know if I am doing something that is harmful. Also, I only do this once a year. I already did it about three weeks ago, but I would like to hear any additional impute.

I guess my idea in using it this way, is sort of a beginning of the year blanket ,that will help control disease and bugs. But if I am really doing something incorrect in this thinking let me know, but don't be mean.

thanks Earl, and anyone else.

Maria
