Pruning spirea bushes---How far down should you prune spirea bushes? Should I leave any of the dead flowers on or can I prune them nearly to the ground. Mine have become so bushy that you can not tell that their are individual plants there. I want to know that I have 3 individual bushes not a headge of spirea bushes. I think they look so much better as individual bushes.

: Hi Linda,

You should probably leave them as they are if there is no other reason to prune them, such as if they are way too big or in the way such as leaning over a walk or driveway or rubbing a wall of the house or garage.

Pruning the azalea would remove flower buds that you want to save for spring bloom. Better to wait until just as the bloom period finishes up. Then prune immediately.

Hydrangea that bloom on old growth such as H. macrophylly (bigleaf) need to be pruned right after the blooms go by. Others that bloom on new growth such as H. arborescens, H. paniculata, and H. quercifolia can be pruned now or in the spring.

The spirea could be pruned now or in the spring. Next year prune after the flowers finish up.

best wishes,

steven

: Hi!
I have azalea bushes, hydrangena and spirea bushes planted around my house. What do I need to do to get them ready for the winter?? Do I prune them or leave them as they are? Thanks for your help!

Linda
