: My lilac bush is about 50 years old but we need to make
way for "progress". There is one very large root structure and dozens of smaller ones around the perimeter. It just finished blooming this week and I need to know WHEN to try to transplant it and if the new soil will need anything extra.
We have access to a skidsteer and backhoe. The men in my family tell me they can pick it up all in one piece
and put it someplace else....I don't think I'd be able to watch but is it possible?!?!

Kathy, I guess it is possible to move the whole thing but it might be better to divide it into several smaller plants. The time to do it will be late next winter or early spring before new growth starts. Do not plant it any deeper than it is now. If you try when it is in leaf you are nearly guarrenteed to lose it.
