Fall Plants are Movin’!
Categories: News
Mums are hopping from the back greenhouses (where they have been growing since June) to the front houses, ready for you to select for your gardens. We have eight different sizes, in pots, hanging baskets and planters, and 30 different shades creating a kaleidoscope of fall color just for you! To increase the chance of your garden mums returning next year, check out our Gardening Tips page. Other fall flowers available are stocks, snapdragons, ornamental peppers and kale, Montauk daisies, Echibeckia and several perennials, trees and shrubs. Asters and marigolds will be moving forward in early September. Fall is a great time to plant!
You will find a variety of mums in pink pots. A portion of the proceeds from their sale will be donated to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. This is one of MVG’s ways of helping fund cancer research.
Fall cole crops are scheduled to be ready early September. We will have broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, two types of lettuce and spinach. Get yours planted and enjoy some crisp fresh greens in your autumn meals.
We’ve received some calls asking why we don’t schedule our fall veggies to be ready in August. A few of the reasons we grow them for availability in September versus August are:
1) The weather is a little cooler, so we avoid the normally hot and dry August conditions.
2) Rains are more frequent, which reduces the need to irrigate as frequently, and
3) Insect pressure is reduced. Cabbage moths are very active in August. Planting three or four weeks later helps avoid their damage to the fall crops.
We take these things into consideration to help you, our customer, be more successful with your garden.
Come on in and get started on your fall garden. We’ll see you in the greenhouse!
